Discover a wilder and more spiritual side of Kamakura by following the famous Tengu Trail, an immersive hike through nature. Starting from Kita-Kamakura Station, you’ll follow a scenic ridge trail winding through dense forest, in a peaceful and timeless atmosphere.
The Tengu Trail first leads you to a temple perched on the mountainside, a hidden and inspiring place accessible via long stone stairways. Surrounded by forest and steeped in legends of the mythical “Tengu” spirits, this site offers a uniquely mystical atmosphere. On clear days, you may even catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji in the distance, adding a spectacular touch to the experience.
The hike continues along narrow and sometimes steep paths, revealing fascinating historical features along the way, including the mysterious yagura. These ancient rock-carved caves, dating from the 13th to 14th centuries, were used as tombs for samurai and monks, reflecting Kamakura’s rich medieval heritage.
You will then continue toward a temple emblematic of Kamakura’s architectural style, nestled within a vast natural setting. This peaceful location offers a perfect balance between Zen simplicity and natural beauty, ideal for contemplation. The hike gradually leads you back toward central Kamakura, ending near Kamakura Station.
